The Best Time of Year to Buy Everything, By Category

August 24, 2026

Retailers run predictable clearance cycles — model years turn over, seasonal inventory has to move, and post-holiday returns flood back in. Here's when each category on this site tends to hit its real low point.

Outdoors & Sporting

Camping and summer gear bottoms out in late August and September, once stores need the floor space for fall inventory — tents, coolers, and hydration gear see some of the steepest markdowns of the year. Winter sports equipment is the mirror image: wait until March or April, after the season's over and retailers are clearing what didn't sell. Fitness equipment is trickiest — prices actually creep up in December and January chasing New Year's resolutions, then drop hard in February once that demand dries up.

Home

January is the original "White Sale" season — a century-old retail tradition for bedding, linens, and towels that still holds. Furniture runs on a different clock: new floor models typically arrive in February and August, which pushes the outgoing models onto sale in the weeks right before, so late January and late July are worth watching.

Tech

November owns this category — Black Friday and Cyber Monday remain the single deepest discount window for electronics, full stop. The other reliable window is right before a new phone or laptop generation ships: most major manufacturers refresh their lineups in August and September, which pushes real markdowns onto the outgoing models in the weeks before.

Kitchen

Major kitchen appliances follow the same November pattern as tech. Smaller kitchen gear — cookware, gadgets, small appliances — has a second window in January, driven by a mix of post-holiday returns re-entering inventory and stores clearing space for the wave of "new year, new kitchen" merchandising.

Apparel & Footwear

The oldest rule in retail still works here: buy out of season. Winter coats and boots hit their floor in January and February; shorts, sandals, and swimwear hit theirs in July and August. If you can wait a season, apparel is one of the most reliably discountable categories there is.

Tools & Auto

Hardware and power tools see two real windows: Father's Day in June, when tool brands run some of their best promotions of the year, and September through October, when stores clear out warm-weather project inventory to make room for winter stock.

Beauty & Wellness

Beauty runs on semi-annual sale events more than a strict calendar — spring (April) and the lead-up to the holidays (November) are when most beauty retailers run their biggest storewide promotions, and holiday gift sets in particular tend to pack more product per dollar than buying items individually the rest of the year.

Kids & Baby

Kids' clothing follows the same end-of-season clearance pattern as adult apparel, just faster, since kids outgrow sizes before the season even ends. Baby gear gets its biggest markdowns around the quarterly sales events major baby retailers run, plus the same January post-holiday window that hits home goods.

The pattern underneath all of it: almost every category's best price shows up right before or right after the season it's associated with, not during peak demand. If you're not in a rush, timing beats searching.
